A NEW WAY TO VISUALIZE YOUR FINANCIAL JOURNEY
We all understand the importance of paying yourself first and saving enough money to reach a critical investment mass—one that generates sufficient passive income to achieve financial independence. But how much is enough? The 4% rule offers a practical way to calculate this, helping you determine your financial freedom number.
Financial calculators and wealth algorithms are essential tools for tracking your Net Worth and progress; it’s equally important to visualize the journey. After all, dealing with its underlying challenges, postponed gratification, living under your means, saving, and navigating market trends can be daunting.
FILL UP YOUR SPACE ROCKET
One effective analogy that might come for help was introduced by Scott Galloway, a professor, author, and entrepreneur, who compares the path to financial freedom to launching a space rocket.
Galloway emphasizes the importance of accumulating enough savings (income minus expenses) to invest and build wealth. This accumulation forms the critical mass needed to generate passive income to sustain one’s lifestyle.
In his analogy, you are the rocket ship. The rocket needs sufficient fuel (saving and investments) to overcome gravity (annual expenses) and reach space, where it can finally orbit effortlessly—symbolizing the state of financial freedom where passive income covers all your expenses forever.
The strength of this analogy lies in its simplicity:
- Fuel and Gravity: Just as a rocket requires a significant amount of fuel to fight gravity and reach space (fuel makes up 75% of the rocket’s weight), you need substantial savings and investments to overcome your expenses and achieve financial independence. The accumulation and investment process can be long and “boring,” but you will eventually fill the tank in full.
- Effortless Orbit: The rocket can stay in orbit effortlessly once it reaches space. Similarly, once you’ve accumulated enough investments, your passive income can sustain your lifestyle with little effort. You will switch your mindset and activities from building wealth, to protecting and maintaining wealth.
Not surprisingly, Galloway also points out that most people struggle to generate enough income to reach “space.” The key is to save enough so that your primary income sources become passive. While saving the first $100,000 is incredibly challenging, the next $100,000 becomes easier as your investments gain momentum. Once your income significantly exceeds your expenses and you’ve built a substantial investment portfolio, you’ve effectively made the jump” to financial freedom.
The takeaway is clear: prepare for the launch by securing enough investments to achieve financial independence.
Galloway further elaborates in his blog, “No Mercy, No Malice,” stating that earners—who rely solely on earned income—will likely never reach “space.” In contrast, those who save and invest in building a sufficient critical mass of passive income can become owners, owning the rocket ship that successfully reaches orbit.
BOTTOM LINE
Like athletes, also in investing might be helpful to visualize your next task and your ultimate goal. If the rocket analogy resonates with you, it’s time to ask yourself:
- Are you an earner or an owner?
- Are you ready to save and invest enough to fill the tank of your rocket and reach orbit?
- Are you prepared to achieve Financial Freedom?
