When Opportunity Knocks, What do you do?

When opportunity knocks on your door, what do you do?

You know the drill:
 This is a unique moment. You cannot let it go
 The window of opportunity is closing soon
 If you are smart, you recognise this is the perfect time to take it.

It happens in life, in business and with investments. It can be an opportunity for a job position to accept, a house to buy, or an investment to approve. In those moments, you will feel a lot of pressure to accept the proposal on the spot. While some once-in-a-lifetime opportunities are just scams, poor options, or dead-end paths, other proposals could be legit.

Still, the major question remains: is it a good opportunity for you right now?

Is it in line with your strategy? Does it help to get closer to your goals or not?
“You just need to have the courage to eliminate everything that doesn’t directly feed what you really want.” (James Clear, Author of Atomic Habits)

I feel the tricky part is this: If you know what you want, you’ll be willing to pass up even brilliant opportunities because, ultimately, they are distractors from your vision.

“A ‘once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is irrelevant if it is the wrong opportunity.” (Jim Collins, author of Good to Great).

It is fair to say that “Once-in-a-lifetime” opportunities (i.e., distractors) are even too common. But the right opportunities will only pop up when you decide what you want and, thus, start selectively attending to them.

Do you have a clear vision of what you want and where to go? That will help you avoid distractors and quickly recognise real opportunities: those that get you closer to your goals!
